Since the world learned how to manufacture large pieces of glass, window grilles have become structurally irrelevant. Utilizing them may now be an obsolete science, but it’s not a lost art. Types
Full Divided Light Grilles – We install grilles on the outer surfaces of the glass, producing a convincing look of real divided lights. This configuration involves a permanently installed Fibrex® grille on the exterior, an aluminum spacer between the panes, and a removable or permanently installed interior grille.
Between-the-Glass Grilles – To replicate the impression of true small lights minus the hassle in cleaning, we can apply aluminum grilles permanently between the glass. This way, the inside and outside glass surfaces would remain smooth for carefree cleaning.
Removable Interior Grilles – For greater versatility, we can just install removable interior hardwood grilles. They snap into clips on the interior side of the windows that you can detach whenever you please.
Patterns
Colonial – A common pattern among different traditional architectures, colonial consists of crisscross grilles. Older variations come in a 12-over-12 pattern, but modern interpretations accept 9-over-9 and 6-over-6 grille designs.
Farmhouse – The American Farmhouse homes usually feature double-hung windows with 2-over-2 grilles, creating tall and narrow lights. However, the farmhouse pattern usually just involves the upper sash when used in other architectures, like the Craftsman Bungalow’s aesthetic.
Prairie – This option comprises four long lines that run across each side and form perfect squares in the corners of each sash. We do a modified iteration where two-sash windows are treated like a single glass panel to produce a larger, plain middle portion.
Considering all architectural styles, except the Ranch, have an individual window design rulebook, knowing your home’s quintessential style elements is key to using grilles right. Otherwise, the mismatch might create a jarring effect and ruin your curb appeal altogether.
