    They usually are available in two forms: fixed and functional. Each has its own winning qualities.

    Fixed

    • Weathertight – By definition, fixed arched windows keep the elements completely out. Operating units with great energy efficiency prevent the entry of unwanted drafts, but they don’t completely reduce air infiltration to zero.

    • Secure – Without any means of opening them, they provide maximum security. While they’re not shatterproof, any window contractor will say that breaking their tough, twin panes would be a Herculean task.

    • Low Maintenance – Fixed, arched windows not only have fewer components, but they also have no moving parts. They only need their interior and exterior surfaces to be washed to remain dirt-free and require no lubrication.

    Functional

    • Ventilating – Functional, arched windows can have either sliding or swinging panels, providing natural ventilation. If you choose casements, you can utilize most of the opening to breathe in fresh drafts and expel stale, indoor air. With double-hung windows, you can maximize the stack effect to help keep your rooms cool and dry. You can’t expect the same from picture windows with fixed transoms.

    • Egress-Ready – Windows that open can be used as escape routes or provide entrances for firefighters or police officers in case of emergency. If you want to install arched units in finished, upstairs rooms, the building code will most likely require them to be functional.

    • Historically Accurate – If you ask honest window contractors, the use of double-hung or casement units can help you achieve architectural authenticity. In most cases, old-world home styles demand either of the two windows to be in the facade.
